GLOBAL DRESSAGE FOUNDATION

The Global Dressage Foundation started its work on 7th July 2012 during an official board meeting at CHIO Aachen. But its goal, to organise a yearly meeting called the Global Dressage Forum, has a much longer history.
The Global Dressage Forum was started in 2001 by Academy Bartels in Hooge Mierde, Holland. It was based on the earlier initiative by the late Herman Duckeck, chairman of the International Dressage Trainers Club, to organise a bi-annual meeting for trainers to study the technique and knowledge of training. Instead of organising a meeting just for trainers, Academy Bartels created a new concept for all stakeholders in dressage. Sport demonstrations and lectures from top professionals and scientists were the basis for information exchange and discussion.
The ‘Sport Foundation’, a family trust of the Bartels family, supported the Global Dressage Forum financially from 2001 until 2012. This Foundation was started by dr. A.J.H. Bartels, father of Joep Bartels. Since the death of the founder of the Sport Foundation in 2002, Tineke Bartels-de Vries took over the role of chairman. In December 2011 the current board, existing of members of the Bartels family, decided that it was time for change. A meeting with all stakeholders (IDTC, IDRC, FEI, KNHS and ISES) took place in January 2012 during Jumping Amsterdam.
To give the Global Dressage Forum an even broader and international basis the initiative was taken to establish a ‘Global Dressage Foundation’, to support the organisation of the Forum and guarantee its continuity. On the request of all stakeholders Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark was invited to take the Presidency of the new Foundation. Fortunately she kindly accepted to be the first President of the Global Dressage Foundation.
It was decided to transfer all rights concerning the title of the Global Dressage Forum to the new Foundation, which gives out the yearly license to organise the Global Dressage Forum and controls the program through a program committee. The Program Committee is installed by the board of the Global Dressage Foundation and exists of representatives of the stakeholders. The Program Committee is responsible for the program, which should be in line with the original principle of the Forum: ‘progress of equestrian sports by a better communication between all stakeholders’.
